Goalkeeper Apparel Guide: Jerseys, Shorts and Pants

Choose goalkeeper jerseys, padded shorts, pants and base layers by league color rules, climate, fit and the surfaces where you play.

Quick answer

Start with your team's uniform rules and the goalkeeper's match role. Choose a jersey color that satisfies the competition's distinction rule, then compare sleeve length, fit and any padded shorts or pants by climate, surface and comfort. Check each garment's own size chart and treat goalkeeper clothing and glove sizing as separate decisions.

Goalkeeper apparel should fit the competition rules, weather and the keeper’s movement. Build the set by garment instead of assuming one kit will work for every field and season.

Apparel choices at a glance

Garment Compare Best decision check
Jersey Short or long sleeve, lightweight or padded construction Team color rules, weather and shoulder/elbow room
Shorts Standard or padded styles Waist fit, leg length and whether the padding matches the player’s preference
Pants Full-length or three-quarter length; standard or padded Field surface, temperature and whether the garment stays in place during movement
Base layer Short- or long-sleeve and fitted or looser cut Layering under the jersey and the maker’s size chart
Socks Team issue or player-selected Competition color and shin-guard fit

The IFAB rule requires the goalkeeper’s color to distinguish them from other players and match officials. Check the local league’s uniform policy as well, especially where a club issues a fixed kit.

Choose the jersey first

Confirm the required color before choosing a model. Then decide whether the keeper prefers short or long sleeves and whether a lighter shirt or a garment with padded zones makes sense for the playing surface and personal comfort. Brands list those features model by model; do not infer them from a product photo alone.

Try the jersey with the base layer the goalkeeper will wear. Reach overhead, extend both arms and bend into a set position. The body should stay covered and the sleeves should allow the chosen movement without pulling sharply across the shoulders.

Add shorts or pants when useful

Some goalkeeper lines include padded shorts or pants, while others use standard apparel. Compare the location and shape of the pads, fabric weight, waist construction and leg length. A keeper playing in warm weather may prefer a different setup from one training on a cold or abrasive surface.

Read the product description and washing label. Use the size chart for that exact line, because apparel measurements are not interchangeable with glove sizes or another brand’s sizing.

Build a match-day set

Need Check
Competition Shirt color and any local uniform requirements
Weather Sleeve length and space for a base layer
Surface Shorts or pants, plus the preferred amount of fabric coverage
Fit Separate size charts for top, bottoms and gloves
Care Manufacturer’s wash instructions for technical fabrics

Adidas’ goalkeeper range separates jerseys, shirts, shorts and pants, and notes that some keepers choose padded lower garments. Use those descriptions to compare garment features, then choose by fit and match conditions.

Common questions

Does a goalkeeper jersey have to be a different color?

Under the IFAB Laws of the Game, the goalkeeper's colors must distinguish them from the other players and match officials. Local competitions may add uniform requirements.

Should a goalkeeper wear padded pants?

Padded shorts and pants are apparel options. Compare coverage, temperature, mobility and the garment's fit against the player's surface and preference.

How should a goalkeeper jersey fit?

Use the maker's chart and check that the shoulders, sleeves and torso allow the goalkeeper's full movement without excess fabric.

Do goalkeeper clothes use glove sizing?

No. Use the apparel chart for jerseys and pants, and the glove maker's separate chart for gloves. See our [goalkeeper glove cuts guide](/guides/goalkeeper-glove-cuts).
